Château Shatto is pleased to announce Of Other Worlds, a group exhibition organized in collaboration with DM Office. The show takes its cue from T.J. Clark’s 2018 book, Heaven On Earth, in which the author traces pictorial imaginings of ‘kingdom come’ within the work of familiar old masters (among them Giotto, Breugel, Poussin and Veronese). Clark is less intrigued by the fervor of their faith (ranging from the pious to the agnostic) than by the efficacy of their respective painterly imaginations – the specificities of their visualizations and what those reveal about the political realities of the worlds they inhabited.

As he notes: “Whether this other or higher realm is true is the wrong question. Heaven has an existence for us. Pictures make it possible to think about what that existence consists of—what it is, does, makes available, occludes, renders real or unreal. The specific character of alternative worlds is what matters.”
